A digital nomad visa is a document or program that gives someone the legal right to work remotely while residing away from their country of permanent residence.

When I first started writing about Digital Nomad Visa back in February 2020 the list consisted only of 18 countries that had these types of visas in place or in the works.

That list has now expanded to 67 countries and is still growing, the digital nomad visa has come of age.

Being a digital nomad means that you have decided to become location independent rather than spending your life tied to an office desk.

You certainly don’t need to buy courses to learn how to do it simply because this is not a job but a different lifestyle. But not everything is beaches, mojitos, and tropical weather.  Unnecessary bureaucracy and visa issues come with traveling.

Before I list the countries with these visas let’s get down to some terminology and why countries are creating these types of visas.

What Is a Digital Nomad Visa?

Such people generally have minimal material possessions and work remotely in temporary housing, hotels, cafes, public libraries, co-working spaces, or recreational vehicles, using Wi-Fi, smartphones or mobile hotspots to access the Internet.

 Keep in mind, though, that these visas may not explicitly target digital nomads. Workers and students are able to use digital nomad visas, although the costs and requirements may vary.

For example, the Work From Bermuda Certificate requires scholars to provide proof of enrollment in an undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, or research program with their application.

Digital Nomads vs. Remote Workers

Although the term Remote Worker has become increasingly common. It isn’t perfectly synonymous with being a digital nomad. All digital nomads are, by necessity, remote workers.

Yet the latter term can also apply to those who simply operate from their permanent residence instead of from an office. Laws differ, but entering a country as a tourist generally doesn’t permit the traveler to work while living there.

Working remotely (in your home country) wasn’t as popular as it is today. That’s because many employers felt that their employees wouldn’t be productive if they worked away from the office.

Those who needed to work from home were given special permission for certain reasons, such as family or a lack of workplace accommodations.

But telecommuting has become very common, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many companies now believe that working from home can actually increase productivity.

Some research indicates that people who work from home end up working 1.4 days more than in-office workers.

Why Are Digital Nomad Visas Created?

These are the 5 trends that have resulted in digital nomads being targeted with the creation of a new visa class or temporary residency permit:

• Many countries suffered a severe drop in tourism revenue from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. As a response to this drop in tourism countries began actively targeting digital nomads. The thought was that is better to have one tourist staying 12 months than 26 tourists staying 2 weeks, especially with all the travel regulations.
• Working from home became the new normal during the pandemic and this made it easier to switch countries as well and work remotely. A new class of wealthier digital nomads or techpats (remote technology workers). was born and they were actively targeted with this new visa class. Almost all digital nomad visas come with a minimum income requirement.
• Home-schooling and online schooling has become more socially acceptable since the Covid-19 pandemic allowing more families to be targeted.
• Tax revenues mainly VAT, import duties and application fees from high-spending digital nomads can help the governments’ budgets. Whilst health and social costs stay low.
• Reversing a long-term brain drain. There are plenty of countries that have suffered from brain drain, where highly educated people leave the country to work elsewhere. Digital nomad visas, some with additional tax benefits were created to reverse this brain drain.

Eligibility Criteria For a Digital Nomad Visa

Here are some eligibility criteria you have to meet for the digital nomad visa:

• You must be over 18 years of age.
• You must have a job you can do from anywhere in the world.
• You must have a specific monthly income (the amount varies from country to country).
• Earn a specific amount every month – this depends on what country you visit. However, it’s usually nothing less than $2,500 monthly.
• Evidence of a remote job that allows you to work from anywhere
• A valid international passport
• Other documents – like your CV, certificates, and more
• Not be convicted for a very serious crime in your home country or abroad

The application process differs from country to country. But frequently, it takes this structure;

• Collate all the necessary documents you need – sometimes, you might have to translate them too.
• Fill out the application form – you can get this on official websites
• Book an appointment with the embassy or consulate

I recommend having other essential items like travel insurance, and health insurance. Also, instead of a domiciliary account, opt for a global foreign account, so you don’t get stranded in a foreign country.

You can apply for a digital nomad visa by following the instructions below:

• Make an appointment with an embassy or consulate.
• Prepare your documents.

Fill Out The Application Form

You need to fill out the digital nomad visa application form as per the instructions.

Some countries require you to fill out the application online and then print it out and sign it, while others require you to fill out the form at the embassy or consulate physically.

Please note that you have to provide all accurate information with your up-to-date details.

Set an Appointment With an Embassy or Consulate

You also have to locate a visa office which can be either an embassy or consulate— keep in mind that an embassy and consulate are not the same institutions.

Depending on your country of residence, you may be required to apply at a neighboring embassy. Nevertheless, once you locate your visa office, you have to schedule an appointment to submit your application and attend the visa interview.

Prepare Your Documents

After you fill out your application, you have to prepare the rest of your required documents. You may have to translate some of your documents or certify them with an apostille stamp.

What Is the Income Tax Situation with Digital Nomad Visas?

The tax situation with digital nomad visas is a complicated one. Some countries expect you to pay full tax, some others have tax deductions or special rates, and there are some with zero taxes.

The countries with digital nomad visas and zero tax assume you still pay tax in your home country and therefore they will not tax you. Almost all countries require you to have private health insurance and do not require you to pay social security benefits.

On a continent-by-continent basis. I will list the countries that have a Digital Nomad Visa in place, this is a special visa or temporary residency permit that allows you to work remotely for a foreign employer or foreign incorporated business.

In some countries, the concept is so new that authorities have no idea how to deal with it yet, or the process is very bureaucratic.

Do I Have To Pay Taxes Under a Digital Nomad Visa?

You usually have to file a tax return in your country of residence while on a digital nomad visa.

However, this changes depending on which country you are working in. For example, if you have a digital nomad visa in Estonia and stay for more than 183 days, you are considered a taxable resident.

On the other hand, some countries have a one-year tax exemption for digital nomads— you have to check beforehand with your host country.

What Type of Work Can I Do With a Digital Nomad Visa?

Usually, you can do any type of work under a digital nomad visa, provided that you can do that job remotely over the internet.

However, the most popular job types for digital nomads include:

Difference Between Digital Nomad Visa VS Tourist Visa

A digital nomad visa is a temporary permit that allows you to work remotely in a country for an extended period.

This clause means you can only work from a laptop or computer during your stay. Digital nomad visas can be valid for up to a year, and you can extend them for more.

A tourist visa is more of a short-term permit that gives you access to visit a country on holiday. It’s similar to a visitor visa that allows you to visit family or friends in a foreign country.

Typically, they last anywhere between 90 days to 180 months, depending on the country. And unlike a digital nomad visa, you’re not permitted to work during your stay.

Although many digital nomads work remotely in foreign countries using a tourist visa, we recommend getting a legal, long-term visa with a permit.

A digital nomad visa can cost from $200 up to $2,000.

Some Caribbean countries like:

• Barbados,
• Antigua and Barbuda

Have the highest application fees for digital nomad visas, up to $3,000 for family applications. However, some countries, like Georgia, offer digital nomad visas free of charge to attract more applicants.

Applying With Family Members For a Digital Nomad Visa

You can apply with family members for a digital nomad visa. Still, some countries may only allow you to bring your spouse/registered partner and your children— no extended family members.

• You were convicted of a serious crime.
• You do not have a job you can do remotely.
• You do not meet the annual income requirement.

1. Czechia (Czech Republic)

Capital city Prague is a favorite among digital nomads.

Czechia has had a freelancer visa for a while and it is called the Zivno, it is unfortunately pretty complicated as you need to have a trade license for one of the trades listed here.

It allows you to work for one year and it can be extended. The limited list of trades makes this a harder visa to get in Europe.

The Czech Republic’s freelancer visa, Zivno, is a bit trickier to acquire than most on this list.

This program requires a variable fee, proof of a minimum income of 124,500 koruna (CZK)—about $5,121.62 USD—and documents like a passport, proof of accommodation, criminal record, etc.

Applicants must also receive a trade license for one of the jobs on this list before they apply. That means juggling remote work with a local career, albeit a temporary one.

Applicants will also be required to pass an immigration interview. The visa lasts for one year, and being approved can take 90–120 days.

2. Iceland Digital Nomad Visa

Iceland has a long term visa for remote workers.

It is only valid for 6 months and if you apply whilst staying in the Schengen area it is only valid for 90-days.

This is a country of stunning landscapes and you will never get bored here no matter what time of the year.

It is one of the most expensive places when it comes to the cost of living though and you have to show a very healthy monthly income to apply.

So this is not for everyone though.

3. Croatia

The Croatian Digital Nomad Visa got a lot of press in 2021 and all the processes, forms and legislation have been worked out.

It gives you a low-cost option to stay and work remotely in Europe.

It is technically not a visa but more a temporary residency permit. You can apply when in Croatia, but also at Croatian consulates and embassies.

4. Estonia Digital Nomad Visa

Estonia was revolutionary when it created its e-residency program, which helps foreign entrepreneurs run their EU-based businesses more streamlined and with digital signatures.

In June 2020, Estonia created a one-year digital nomad and freelancer visa that allows you to stay in the country and work remotely.

It was the first country in the world to have an official digital nomad visa.

On Aug. 1, 2020, Estonia launched an official Digital Nomad Visa for remote workers to remain in the country for up to one year.

Applicants need proof of a minimum of €3,504 in income and pay a state fee of €80 or €100 for a Type C (short stay) or Type D (long stay) visa, respectively.

Additional requirements include having a valid travel document and health insurance. They must also pass a background check.

Applications must be submitted in person at the nearest Estonian Embassy or Consulate, and the processing time is typically 15 to 30 days.

5. Georgia

Why I think Georgia makes an excellent case for the best digital nomad destination. 95 countries can enter Georgia visa-free and stay up to 365 days, tell me one other country that has rolled out the welcome mat this far.

Georgia does not have a digital nomad visa per se, but they do allow you to work remotely whilst staying in the country.

You have to prove that you make $2,000 a month or have a bank statement showing $24,000. If you work for more than 183 days you will become a tax resident and the income tax is a medium 20%.

However, Georgia has an excellent Individual Entrepreneur scheme, which taxes only 1% on your business turnover up to about $155,000.

I think this scheme for which you have to register works perfectly for Digital Nomads and freelancers.

Georgia is one of the most attractive Digital Nomad visas on the market today. It’s easy and fast and does not require visa runs plus the cost of living is as low if not lower than some other digital nomad favorites.

If you look at the cost of living index on Numbeo, Georgia ranks 91 out of 137 countries. Georgia has an exciting capital in Tbilisi, which has plenty of history and culture to offer and feels like Europe.

The Caucasus mountains make for excellent hiking and skiing. The black sea coast offers seaside retreats in the hot summer months. Plus with excellent food and the oldest wine culture on offer, what is not to like about Georgia?

6. Romania Digital Nomad Visa 2023

Its is the country with the EU’s fastest fixed broadband Internet speeds. Romania has approved the digital nomad visa on the 21st of December 2021.

This will be a 12-month visa that can be renewed for another 12 months. Initially, it was thought this Visa would have low-income requirements of €1,100 per month.

Now seems to have been multiplied to 3 times this amount at €3,300 per month.

Romania will have a harder time attracting Digital Nomads with Croatia a popular destination having monthly income requirements of only €2,232.

7. Spain

Spain currently has the Non-Lucrative Visa which is a visa where you are technically not allowed to work, it is more for people that are self-sufficient or retired.

However, who notices remote work?

Besides this Spain is working on a Digitals Nomad Visas a draft bill has been introduced called the Startups Law.

Under the proposed law, which will go live in January 2023, remote workers can get a visa that allows them to stay and work for 12 months.

This can be extended for a total of an extra 48 months. There would be a 15% tax for the first €600,000 earned. We keep you up to date with the developments.

Spain’s low cost, beaches, mountains and vibrant cities like Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia make it a favorite for location-independent people.

The tech scene in Barcelona is growing rapidly.

8. Norway

Norway is a stunning country and a wealthy one thanks to its oil and massive sovereign wealth fund.

It is a progressive nation and they have created an opportunity for digital nomad and remote workers with the 2-year Independent Contractor Visa.

You have to have deep pockets though as Norway is an expensive place to live.

9. Hungary

The Hungary Digital Nomad Visa called White Card was launched in November 2021. It is one of the easier Digital Nomad visas with an income requirement of only €2,000 per month.

This is an individual residency permit and it does not allow for couples or families to be joined. The primary target for this visa is “singles under 40.”

You can now enjoy and work remotely in beautiful Budapest, a country that has one of the fastest internet speeds in Europe.

10. Latvia Digital Nomad Visa

Latvia has decided to follow in the footsteps of its northern Neighbor Estonia, by creating the Latvia Digital Nomad Visa. The visa is valid for one year with an option to renew it for another year.

This visa is only available to foreign nationals that are working for an employer or business that is registered in an OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) country.

11. Greece Digital Nomad Visa 2023

Greece has it all, from culture to food, to sun-kissed beaches and plenty of islands. It also has decent internet speeds and in Europe enjoys a low cost of living. Greece has two programs in place to attract digital nomads.

The first program is an income tax reduction of 50% for a period of 7 years. To certain nationalities moving or returning to Greece. Committing to staying for a minimum period of 2 years.

The 2nd program, which became official at the start of October 2021 is the Greece digital nomad visa for non-EU/EEA citizens. This allows you to stay and do remote work in Greece for a foreign employer. Or your own foreign-registered company.

The period is initially for 1 year but can be extended twice to 3 years in total.

12. Germany Digital Nomad Visa

The freelance visa of Germany is called Aufenthaltserlaubnis für selbständige Tätigkeit. You have to deal with German bureaucracy as it takes up to 4 months to get approval.

Germany’s residence permit is granted to freelancers and other self-employed workers to reside within the country for 3 months, but this can be extended by up to 3 years.

In addition to the visa application form and a €60 fee, digital nomads must submit photocopies of documents with their application, including, but not limited to:

• A passport
• A cover letter
• Two biometric photographs
• A portfolio of previous freelance work

The application must be submitted in person to the nearest German Embassy or Consulate.

Before applying for the residence permit, prospective travelers must secure a German residence and register it with the local Residence Registration Office.

They must open a German bank account, register with the Tax Registration Office, and secure German health care.

13. Portugal Digital Nomad Visa

Portugal has the D7 Visa which works well for digitals nomads and is valid for 1 year but you can renew this for up to 5 years.

After 5 years you have the option to go for permanent residency. You can enjoy living and working in Lisbon, Porto, the stunning beaches of the Algarve, and the Islands of Madeira and the Azores.

Portugal on 30 October 2022 launched a digital nomad visa. This one comes with less paperwork than the D7 visa but will not give you a pathway to permanent residency.

14. Albania

Albania has since the start of the summer approved a law to make it easier to get digital nomads and pensioners to get a residency permit.

The process has been streamlined where only one permit is sufficient instead of the two that were required in the past.

The Albania Digital Nomad Visa is for one year and can be extended for an additional year and after that for five years. If you do the full 7 years you can apply for permanent residency.

15. Malta

The tiny European island nation of Malta has a digital nomad visa called the Nomad Residency Permit. This program is targeted at NON-EU remote workers and has a length of 1 year which can be renewed.

Malta boasts a nationwide 5G network and English as one of the official languages. It also has over 300 days of sunshine a year.

16. Cyprus

With Malta and Greece having digital nomad visas it was expected that Cyprus would follow quickly. It gives UK citizens, as well as other non-EU citizens, the right to stay and work remotely on the island for 12 months.

Cyprus is the latest country to launch a Digital Nomad Visa, which allows up to 100 non-EU applicants to live and work from the country from January 2022.

Conditions 

• Only 100 applications will be accepted (for now).
• Applicants could be self-employed, or freelance.
• A certificate of police clearance from the country of residence is needed.
• Permits will be issued for one year, with the option to renew for two further years.
• Spouses and children of digital nomad visa holders are allowed to live in Cyprus as long as they do not take up paid employment.
• The applicant for a digital nomad visa must earn at least EUR 3,500 per month, plus 20% for their spouse and 15% for each minor.

This visa can be extended for another 24 additional months. Applicants will need a police clearance certificate from their country of residence and private medical insurance.

This program was limited to 100 but this has now been increased to 500 temporary residency permits.

17. Mexico Digital Nomad Visa

With its beaches, Mayan culture, Colonial culture, diverse landscapes, the capital Mexico City, and great cuisine. Mexico is a favorite with travelers and digital nomads.

Part of the reason is its 6-month-long tourist visa and the low cost of living.

There is also the Temporary Resident Visa which allows you to stay one year and can be renewed after that for another 3 years.

18. Belize

Belize has launched its Work Where You Vacation program which is a Belize Digital Nomad Visa that allows you to stay and remote work for 180 days.

You will need proof of a minimum of $75,000 annual earnings and health insurance coverage of $50,000. Enjoy this English-speaking country with great beaches and Mayan historical sites.

19. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is famous for its relaxed lifestyle, great surfing, gorgeous beaches and an amazing landscape of jungle, volcanoes and waterfalls.

The visa which was already in place before the Covid-19 pandemic is called Rentista, which allows foreigners to stay for a 2-year period.

This can be extended. This visa is for self-employed people or entrepreneurs, you are not allowed to work for another company. Besides the Rentista visa, Costa Rica is also working on a digital nomad visa which will be for 1 year up to 2 years maximum.

20. Panama Digital Nomad Visa

Panama is the most developed nation in Central America. With a high standard of living, a warm climate, great nature, beaches and vibrant cities.

With high-speed internet and a low cost of living this country is excellent for digital nomads. In May 2021 Panama created what it called the Short Stay Visa for Remote Workers.

It is a 9-month visa that can be extended for another 9 months and allows you to work remotely

21. Ecuador

In July 2022 Ecuador launched its digital nomad visa. Ecuador is a stunning country with the Amazon jungle, the Ocean, The Andes mountains and cultural colonial cities all within its borders.

The low cost of living and low entry requirements should make this a popular destination for digital nomads.

How to Apply for Ecuador’s Digital Nomad Visa?

To qualify for the nomad visa, you must have:

• A clean police record
• €460 for the application fee
• A passport valid for at least six months
• Proof of Ecuadorian health insurance and,
• Evidence of at least €1,266 in monthly foreign income (three times Ecuador’s “basic salary”)

The visa is open to applicants from most countries but Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Cameroon, North Korea, Cuba, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Philippines, Gambia, Ghana, India, Iraq, Iran, Kenya, Libya, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Syria, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Yemen.

Normally, the procedure takes two to four months.

22. Brazil Digital Nomad Visa

As the first South American Country Brazil has joined the list of countries with a digital nomad visa.

Officially published on the 24th of January 2022 we now have some specific details regarding the temporary visa.

It will be a one-year visa that can be renewed for an additional year. The minimum monthly income requirement is US$1,500.

The process has to be done at a Brazilian embassy.

23. Seychelles Digital Nomad Visa

The beautiful African Island archipelago of Seychelles has joined the list with its Seychelles Workcation Program.

The requirements seem very easy, you need to have a valid passport, provide documents of proof of being an employee or business owner and provide proof of income or wealth.

Like almost all other programs you will need health and travel insurance.

24. Cape Verde (Cabo Verde)

The Cape Verde archipelago, a former Portuguese colony, of 10 islands lies 570 kilometers west of the African continent in the Atlantic Ocean.

It is blessed with year-round sun and on some islands, there is hardly any rainfall, which results in 350 days of sunshine.

Its Remote Working Cabo Verde program is not advertised well.

It is eligible for anyone from Europe, North America, the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and the Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO).

25. Namibia

Namibia is the first mainland African country to launch a digital nomad visa.

It has a low income threshold of $2,000 of monthly income. And is valid for 6 months, giving you plenty of time to explore the amazing national parks and sceneries.

26. Mauritius

The Premium Visa program for Mauritius is one I like as there is no fee and no proof of income.

This opens this visa up to a whole range of digital nomads.

The name already implies it with the Cayman Islands Global Citizen Concierge Program, only wealthy remote workers are welcome.

And yes you can see this already in the income that you have to prove to apply for the program. This program is clearly aimed to attract high-level executives that can work remotely.

The program is the longest with a maximum of 2 years and allows you to travel in and out as much as you like.

28. Dominica

The Commonwealth of Dominica, which is located in the Caribbean. Between the French Islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, has announced a Digital Nomad visa program called WIN Work In Nature. 

This program allows people to stay on this lush tropical volcanic island famous for its hot springs for up to 18 months.

It also offers an income tax break and families can put their children through private and state-owned schools.

Now Dominica has probably the cheapest option to stay on a Digital Nomad visa in the Caribbean in terms of the cost of living.

Dominica, also known as the Nature Island of the Caribbean, provides an 18-month Work In Nature Extended Stay Visa for digital nomads.

Applicants must present proof of expected income of $50,000 USD, in addition to paying a $100 USD application fee and either $800 USD single or $1,200 USD family visa fee.

Several other documents, including the biodata page of a passport, a bank reference letter, and proof of health insurance, must also be submitted alongside the application.

Approval letters are often sent within 14-28 days.

29. Bermuda

Bermuda has named its program the Work From Bermuda visa. The cost of applying is cheap and there is no requirement to prove a certain wage.

However, this is the most expensive country on earth when it comes to the cost of living. Like the Cayman Islands, this is more of a destination for the well-heeled. Although not promoted that way, the cost of living makes it that way.

30. Anguilla

Anguilla’s Digital Nomad visa includes PCR testing and surveillance once you are on the island. Anguilla has a tiny population of 15,000 and its size is 26 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide at its widest point.

This may be a bit too remote for most nomads as also its size means it is less connected, however, some might be drawn to this.

31. Grenada

The Caribbean island of Grenada, also known as the spice island, has finally finalized its digital nomad visa.

 

It will be valid for one year and can be renewed for an additional year.

A big advantage is that you can enjoy the zero-income tax that Grenada offers.

32. The Bahamas Digital Nomad Visa

The 16 tax-free islands of The Bahamas have launched the Bahamas Extended Access Travel Stay (BEATS) programme.

You can stay for 12 months but this is extendable to 3 years.

Now is your chance to do some island hopping and swim with the famous pigs. It is an expensive place to live but has easy access to Miami and the rest to the USA.

33. Antigua & Barbuda

The island nation of Antigua & Barbuda has called its digital nomad visa the Antigua Nomad Digital

Residence.

The islands have a total of 365 different beaches allowing you to enjoy them all for 2 days each.

34. Barbados

Barbados was very quick with launching its digital nomad program called the Barbados Welcome Stamp. Have you ever wanted to live on a Caribbean island now is your chance, you will have to like island life.

Barbados is a well-connected hub that allows you to explore the rest of the Caribbean and Central America assuming no travel restrictions.

Although not a cheap place to live, it is cheaper than any of the other Caribbean countries offering remote working visas at the moment. It also has some of the best internet speeds in the Caribbean.

35. Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is the latest Caribbean island to see the benefits of long-staying digital nomads for its economy.

It has adjusted its Non-Immigrant Visa so you can stay for 12-months on a multiple entry visa and work remotely, it is called Saint Lucia Live It.

The cost of the visa is cheap and there are no minimum income requirements.

36. Curacao

Out of the hurricane zone in the Caribbean, and part of the Leeward Antilles, Curacao offers something different. You can enjoy the Dutch colonial town of Willemstad as well as the beautiful beaches on offer.

The @HOME in Curacao program allows for an initial 6 months stay with the possibility of an extension for another six months.

37. Montserrat

Montserrat is only slightly larger than Anguilla with a size of 102 km2 its population is even smaller at 5,900. It is located north of Guadeloupe and to go here you have to really want the solitude.

Montserrat has named its program the Monserrat Remote Work Stamp. Internet speeds seem low, but a fiber optic network is in the works.

38. Thailand Digital Nomad Visa

Thailand has been a favorite digital nomad destination, especially around Chiang Mai and Bangkok with a low cost of living and fast internet speeds.

However, most Nomads use the 60-day tourist visa which they can extend for another 30 days (by going to the immigration office) before they had to do a visa run.

After a long wait, Thailand has finally launched (1 September 2022) its Long Term Residency (LTR) Visa, a 10-year visa for wealthy expats, investors, retirees and digital nomads.

The requirements are so high that 99.99% of digital nomads will not qualify.

Besides an income requirement of $80,000 applicants need to work for a public company on a stock exchange or for a private company that can show a combined revenue of $150 million over the last 3 years.

39. Sri Lanka Digital Nomad Visa

Sri Lanka has not announced a specific Digital Nomad Visa but has made the process of getting extensions (up to 270 days) to a Visa a lot easier.

Sri Lanka offers a great mix of beaches, national parks, great food and plenty of historical sites, a great environment for the Digital Nomad.

40. Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa 2023

Thailand’s southern neighbor Malaysia has laid down the welcome mat for digital nomads.

On 1 October 2022 its De Rantau Nomad Pass will go live.

This Malaysia digital nomad visa is valid for 12 months and can be extended for an additional 12 months.

It is part of a program to create digital nomad communities with special products and services targeting them like an ecosystem. The income threshold to apply is set at a low $2,000 per month.

41. Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa

Taiwan has not got a program that specifically targets Digital Nomads, however, it has a program called the Gold Card.

The Gold Card is an open-end work permit for Taiwan, and it is a Visa to attract talent. However, even if you do not have the skills but can show you make a monthly income of 160k TWD (USD 5700) you can apply.

If you don’t have the earnings you need some pretty high skills to apply, like being a lawyer, or holding a PhD degree etc.

42. Dubai (UAE)

The city of Dubai launched its one-year virtual working program for remote workers and digital nomads. You can work now for one year in this megacity on the coast and benefit from the zero income tax for individuals.

You can apply from abroad as well as in Dubai itself but you may need a Dubai visa to enter.

43. Indonesia – Bali

Another favorite Southeast Asia destination for digital nomads and yoga lovers is Bali, Indonesia. This island offers plenty of co-working spaces and cafes with people on tourist visas doing remote work.

This means that every 60 days a visa run had to be done to get to extend the stay, another way was bribing some immigration officials.

At one time Nomad List reported that there was a digital nomad community of 5,000 working from the beach area of Canggu at any one time.

After more than 2 years of the Covid-19 pandemic in which Indonesia closed itself to international tourism, there are finally signs of digital nomads returning to the island.

The Indonesian government has been talking for the past 18 months about the possibility of a 5-year digital nomad visa.

And the rumors’ are getting so strong now that I am putting it on the list of countries to introduce a DN visa soon.

44. Montenegro

Split-based Dutch entrepreneur Jan de Jong. The driving force behind the Croatia Digital Nomad Visa has announced on his LinkedIn that Montenegro is also working on a DN visa.

The Montenegro Digital Nomad visa is to be launched in Q1 of 2022. There are no further details of the program.

45. Italy

Italy is working on a digital nomad visa, it became news when it was signed into law on 28 March 2022. This does not mean it is available now.

And the exact requirements are unknown. What is known is the following:

• Mandatory health insurance required
• The length is 1 year. This can be renewed
• You must have adequate accommodation
• There will be a minimum income threshold
• You must be tax compliant in Italy before applying for the visa
• Only for highly skilled workers, this could be as strict as having a Master’s degree

A word of warning is that Italy is notoriously bureaucratic and you will be well advised to use a tax advisor that can deal with the associated paperwork.

46. South Africa

In April 2022 the South African government announced it is working on a Digital Nomad Visa. Which will be valid for one year.

There is a rumored minimum income requirement of $3,000 a month.

47. Serbia

The Balkan country of Serbia is working on a digital nomad visa to allow people to stay and work for one year.

The income requirements are pretty steep at €3,500 when compared to neighboring countries like Romania and Croatia.

In the meantime, there is a tax break in place exempting digital nomads from tax for the first 90 days of stay.

48. Colombia

Medellin is another hub for digital nomads with most people coming in as a tourist and are allowed to stay up to 90 days.

This applies to tourists from the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the European Union.

Leaving the country and returning gives you another 90-day stay but you are allowed a maximum of 180 days per year.

In June 2022 it was reported that Colombia’s Digital Nomad Visa may soon be a reality.

49. North Macedonia

With Croatia getting a lot of international news for its digital nomad visa, the former Yugoslavia nation, North Macedonia decided to develop its own Digital Nomad Visa.

When more details arrive I will update this page. This country would appeal for its low cost of living as well as its stunning lake Ohrid.
